Golden Globe Nominations Announced

It’s the end of the year in December and traditions occur that happen around this time: frenzied shopping at the mall, sing-songy Christmas songs, eggnog latte at Starbucks and award show nominations.

Among a flurry of various critics groups naming their film picks of 2010, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have now announced the nominations for their star banquet, the  Golden Globe Awards. This officially starts the Oscar campaigning for the mother of all award shows, the Academy Awards. The Golden Globes usually act as a prognosticator for what the Hollywood film industry wants to see and approve.

Some peculiar choices fill the categories this year. For example, Red, the absurd action vehicle with Bruce Willis, as Best Comedy? Emma Stone, chosen for Actress in a Comedy, in Easy A? The Tourist as Best Comedy?

But other esteemed films get their recommended nominations. The King’s Speech received 7 nods, while both The Fighter and The Social Network received 6 each. Johnny Depp is chosen twice in the same category, Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, for Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist. We’ll see if there’s a tie for this one.

The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be telecast live on NBC, January 16, 2011 at 8pm EST.
