Streisand as Mama Rose?

After finally seeing Gypsy on stage for the first time back in 2007 starring a fierce Patti LuPone at New York City Center, I was amazed and startled by what would be a classic portrayal by one of today’s strong-willed divas. I’ve never imagined anybody else who could succeed her in playing Mama Rose. Now comes word there is one such person that can actually upstage Mama LuPone. She is Barbra Streisand, the consummate diva herself.

Ms. Barbra is currently in serious talks with show creators Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents to play Mama Rose not on Broadway, but in a new cinematic version of Gypsy. Ha! If Barbra were to do a Broadway show now, any show, the line would already have started. But a new Gypsy film starring Barbra is still major stuff and would certainly be a high-profile project. I just wonder how demanding Barbra can be and how long the process would be before the film comes to fruition. Let’s just hope it’s not all just a diva dream.
