Adventurous Choices Fill Golden Globe Nominations

Bridesmaids, War Horse, Clooney, that Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, plus The Artist will all be trucking into Hollywood. That is, trying to make room with each other at the Beverly Hilton next month as they have been nominated for the 69th edition of the Golden Globe Awards.

With a complete representation of tastes and artistic diversity in categories honoring both film and television, the collective of foreign journalists that bestow the awards, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, have made sure all the stars will be present. To fill out each category, a standard selection of five nominees usually is chosen. However, there is an exception to that rule. In the Motion Picture, Drama category, the Association has nominated six titles, indicating that the group found it difficult this year to have the field be constricted to only five dramas. With cerebral and lofty adult fare like Moneyball, The Descendants and The Ides of March up for Best Drama, the awards season intensifies as it heads into a strictly competitive race. Determining the dark horse for this field can be as head-scratching as My Week With Marilyn being slotted in the Best Musical or Comedy field, but it certainly will not be War Horse.

A reliable Hollywood contender, George Clooney, has earned three nominations–Best Actor in The Descendants; Directing and Screenplay for The Ides of March. A group of Bridesmaids were brought out into the forefront for Best Musical or Comedy, along with Kristen Wiig for Best Actress, Musical or Comedy. Plus a completely retro film on Hollywood’s bygone era of the silent film in the early twentieth century is picking up speed once it expands into more cinemas, The Artist, an homage to vintage black and white silents.

Morgan Freeman is the recipient of the Golden Globe’s Cecil B. DeMille Award. The ceremony will be broadcast live on NBC on Sunday, January 15 at 8PM ET/7PM CT with wise-cracking Ricky Gervais hosting for the second time.
